What's the best user interface for adventure games?

Featuring input from Roberta Williams and Al Lowe. User interfaces in adventure games have come a long way since the early days of text-only parser games. But which UI is the best of all time? Is it the Sierra icon bar or the LucasArts 9 verbs? The answer will surprise you because it's none of those. oh, the sugar cube on fire thing seems to be a late, czech variation, possibly no older than the 1990s, and is the first thing anyone who likes historic absinthes tells you NEVER to do; theatrical yes, but why, you paid for that ABV you're burning away ? Belle epoque ritual was dripping cold water over a sugar cube and into the glass, until the cube dissolves, and many would skip the added sugar entirely, and just louche it by the added cold water like people still do with various anise liqueurs today (pastis, ouzo, sambuca); absinthe in the style from that period is pretty pereceptually sweet anyhow due to a strong anise and fennel flavor (another thing lacking in the 90s dyes and additives in vodka version of 'absinthe').

      Thanks for the rundown! I've only had absinthe a few times in my life, and it was definitely the modern variety... and we definitely did it wrong.

    WD40's position as science officer is strangely prescient of Seven Of Nine on Star Trek Voyager - taking on a similar role and with an eerily similar characterization. SQ5 came out a full 4 years before she joined the cast of that show, though....

  • @lancebaylis3169

    27:12 I loved SQ5 as a kid - and as a Trekkie - but as an adult, its veering towards being more overtly a parody of Star Trek works against it in my opinion. Space Quests 1 through to 4 felt distinctly like their own thing. They made fun of all kinds of sci-fi, but also established their own universe with their own distinctive style. Space Quest 5 is more like Galaxy Quest the movie: it's funny and a brilliant comedic take on Star Trek, but it loses something of it's own identity in the process, never quite reaching the same heights as the first four games, and for my money even Space Quest 6 felt more in keeping with the style of those first 4 games in the series. Don't get me wrong, SQ5 is a beautiful game. But it doesn't truly feel like Space Quest.

    Depending on the order in which you do the trials, you can get a slightly different scene when you get out of the water. If you visit the governor's mansion last, it'll bypass the scene with Guybrush and Elane on the bridge completely, and simply have you climbing out just in time to see LeChuck's ship leaving with (apparently) Marley in it. This means the 'relationship' with her isn't wholely established, which changes a few later dialogue scenes too. Nothing too Earth shattering, but it does change the game up some.

    The "What Is" command is one of those things that persisted until Monkey Island abandoned it. I've seen people compare it to the 'Penny Farthing' effect: sometimes, something which is more intuitive and seemingly pretty obvious (like being able to contextually find everything using the mouse) isn't thought about until much, much later, similar to bicycles having wildly different sized wheels until someone invented the gear chain. Another excellent example of this is that 'Read' is an option, but 'Look At' is not.

      A non-Lucasarts example might be mouselook/WSAD movement in first person shooters. I still remember playing through Quake with the tank style keyboard controls, and the idea you could move with the keyboard and aim around with the mouse is honestly something not many people considered until quite late.

    • @spacequesthistorian
      @spacequesthistorian Годину тому

      Absolutely true about the Quake thing. When my brother and I were kids, we used to go round a friend's place every weekend and play LAN games - Quake was, of course, the most popular one. I got ritualistically trounced every single time until I started playing with mouselook. At first I got ridiculed because I sucked at it, but then I started racking up frags, and my brother and friend were like, "Huh... Maybe there is something to this." Everyone forgets that, in the original DOS version of Quake, mouselook wasn't enabled by default. It was a console command you had to enable.

    Aside from the Bjorn, the crewmembers being turned into sorbet balls as a means of taking over the ship is also an oblique reference to Star Trek The Original Series episode "By Any Other Name", where something similar befalls the crew of the Enterprise.

    Mark Crowe doing the graphics in the first 3 games is so under-rated in a way. There's absolute consistency even across the change from AGI to SCI, the escape pod for example is recognizably the same one from the end of SQ2, and although he's a little more expressive, Roger too looks and moves exactly as he did before. I sometimes feel like other Sierra series had trouble maintaining that kind of similar look across games, because the graphics were so often done by new artists in every game.

    I played the Space Quest games on the Amiga originally, and I distinctly remember that the final asteroid section was prone to some of the worst slow down in the game. The Amiga really struggled any time the cleaning robot came into the screen, and the combination of the alert sound and flashing lights in that final run to the escape pod left the poor little Amiga straining to cope. It made me realize that even before the VGA versions became such spectacular messes, Sierra was already really bad at optimizing their software for the Amiga.

    • @spacequesthistorian

      There was a fork of ScummVM called ScummVMMilo that allowed you to replace all graphic and sound assets in SCI games. Not only that, but you could also replace MIDI music with MP3s, add voices to text-only games, play videos instead of cutscenes, and a lot more. Sadly, the developer took it down because he was worried about repercussions from Microsoft/Activision. But I still have it... ;)

I can't honestly say I liked the latter very much, far far too hollywoody for me, however the Vohaul Strikes Back was very fun (sticking to the 'canonical' ending that is) and thank you very much for having created this marathon playthrough, I'm still glad to see them all comprehensively like this!

    This is the worst take I've ever seen for a game, no lie. Mask Of Eternity made the rest of the series look like the juvenile and goofy franchise that it truly was. Mask Of Eternity to this day hearkens to the Dark Souls series that would come over a decade later and similar games of a more environmental narrative. The things introduced to the series with Mask of Eternity SURVIVED to this day in many games; thirdperson, action-based gameplay and narratives that use atmosphere and environmental story-telling are so much more sophisticated than what came before it... especially within King's Quest. Speaking of which, it has tremendous atmosphere... and a very World of Warcraft styled gameplay loop that uses the mouse cursor to interact and attack targets (though more interactive with the lack of auto-attack if I recall correctly). Furthermore, you can very easily make this game run even on modern windows engines so I have no idea what you're talking about. It will literally just run if you install the exe and mount it with any CD mounting software. It's a fantastic game and a leap forward for the narrative strength of games back then. Even games like King's Field, Ecstatica, and Dark Earth sort of paled in comparison to the adventure-styled progression of Mask of Eternity. It sort of fell somewhere between Grim Fandango and Ecstatica 2 when it come to how it presented itself. In fact, I've found that the only people who dislike Mask of Eternity are the people who like the rest of King's Quest series, which is obviously the product of bias. And that personally amazes me considering the rest of the series has the maturity of a dancing monkey.

    • @spacequesthistorian
      @spacequesthistorian 3 дні тому

      I'm glad you found enjoyment in the game. I don't particularly like the rest of the series but I didn't find Mask of Eternity to be an improvement - your mileage may (and indeed seems to) vary. As for running the game on modern systems, I think you either got lucky, or there's been a compatibility update made to the game somewhere that I either wasn't aware of, or wasn't available at the time I made this video. Even GOG discourages people from running the game on modern versions of Windows, and there are scores of forum posts and support inquiries online about how to get the game running. So I wasn't making any of that stuff up, and the information was, to my knowledge, completely accurate at the time I made the video.

    • @spacequesthistorian
      @spacequesthistorian 3 дні тому

      Yeah, that's another thing. Revolution first established the two-button UI with left mouse button being "examine" and right mouse button being "interact." They swapped them around with Broken Sword, and that swap-around is what's now commonly used in indie adventure games, including your own (dare I say masterful) game Technobabylon. And I have some words about that, too, because it sort of relegates "examine" to being an optional feature, since most players have typically been conditioned to clicking the left mouse button first.

    So I was just thinking about this game, looked it up and found this video! This is incredible! Please run Monkey island 2 through an A.I thst would be awesome.

      Thank you! I'm a little wary of continuing this series, given the concerns about the environmental impact of using AI (which I wasn't aware of when I made this video). But if I do, Monkey Island 2 is absolutely a prime candidate for fuckery. 😁

    well yeah marie is on drugs before boarding the plane, she barely survived bains, noxious gas from the sewer, sonny recalling the flight he took to rescue her was drinking and the plane almost destroyed by "bad men" - yeah, marie needs a little something-something before she even takes to the sky

      Or she's a robot. She's actually the prototype for Pris, the "pleasure replicant," from Blade Runner. That would make even more sense.

    Honestly Police Quest is wild for a Sierra series if you think about it. A bunch of adventure games, an FMV adventure game with SWAT 1, a police real-time strategy game (with a full terrorist campaign of all things that I am amazed they got away with doing) with SWAT 2, Sierra somehow managing to make what is considered one of the best tactical shooters with their first shooter with SWAT 3 then SWAT 4 by irrational is also a cult classic.

    • @spacequesthistorian
      @spacequesthistorian 3 дні тому

      That is kinda wild, yeah. I won't be looking at any of the SWAT games, though, 'cos I know I'd be just awful at them. I'm pretty awful at adventure games, too, but at least I'm somewhat comfortable playing them. 😅

      @@spacequesthistorian Understandable, they require a pretty different style of game-play. (and SWAT 3/4 are definitely on the harder side of shooters, SWAT 2 is a bit of a pain to control if you're not good at memorizing keyboard shortcuts and SWAT 1 is just bad from what I see, pretty much just the tedious police procedure stuff without any of the humor or at least absurd Sierra moments) SWAT 1 even gives you a game over for trying to skip the briefings which is absurd. (Imagine playing any other voiced Sierra game and you get slapped with a death for trying to skip the dialogue because you've seen it before.) There is a small connection to the old PQ games in most of them at least. (Sonny is a playable character with nearly max stats in SWAT 2 and the tutorial instructor in 4 while Marie appears as a hostage in SWAT 3's obligatory bank heist mission.)

    I have not watched the entire video but I prefer the text input / parser interface far above the point and click. I learnt a lot of english through Sierra games.

    The hijacking section is so strange. It comes out of nowhere, doesn’t teach police procedure, and is awfully racist, even for the time. It makes me wonder whose idea it was and why they insisted on adding it.

    3:00 And yet not even a fraction as 'insensitive' as PQ4... But yeah, I never cared for this one much. There's something so heavyhanded about how it wants to herd the player down its plotline. I remember liking PQ3 better, although it's been years since I played it.

    The interface has to die With each UI there comes a different design idea. SQH pointed out a lot of the reasons why the ideas changed, but there's a slight shift in game design that lead to radical different forms. The change in technology and taste produced different stories that produced different manipulation methods. I think the manipulation aspect of interaction with the game world is fundamentally determined by the narrative. The linear approach implicates more actions than the explorative. If the player is in one situation at a time, he has to have lots of options to manipulate that situation, so here the parser comes in handy to give the illusion of freedom, even though there are very limited correct actions. As the story progresses to the next situation, the player has to adopt to that and might get more creative to use the parser. This creativity is overwhelming when many situations are already open to the player. The more exploration is an integral part of the game, the less linear its narration could be and so the focus lies less on problem solving. Text adventures often overwhelm with an illusion of things to do, while the number of puzzles to solve the games are relatively low. In early graphic adventures this still is the case. Progress is made by narrowing the problems down. Gradually though this idea comes to its limits. The explorative game introduces more and more problems that would be overwhelming if the method of manipulation was just as complex. To have an enjoyable experience though, complexity has to be interesting. Here it comes again: The narrative shifts to another form of exploration. While the manipulation method itself was the creative field of exploration in before, the discovery of different situations now becomes the center of interest. The player merely wants to discover all the graphical world has to offer, not the vocabulary of the parser. The consequence is a change in methods of manipulation. If the game even drifts away from the exploration of the game world and gets more film like in nature, the narrative again shifts into another form which has to be reflected in the UI. In simple terms: If the interface kills the story, the interface has to die.
